Getting started — overview
Ledger hardware wallets enable you to store private keys securely offline. This guide helps new users go from unboxing to performing a first safe transaction. It uses progressive steps and clear headings so you can reuse the HTML directly in slides, documentation, or a printed quick-start sheet.
What you need
1. Hardware
Ledger models (Nano S Plus, Nano X) — box, cable, and recovery sheet. Only use devices bought from an authorized retailer or from Ledger.com/Start®.
2. A computer or phone
Ledger Live is available for desktop and mobile. Use the official download page: https://www.ledger.com/start
. Avoid third‑party installers and unofficial links.
Step-by-step setup
Step 1 — Unbox & verify
Check that the packaging is sealed and that the recovery sheet is included. Never accept a device that shows signs of tampering. Ledger provides tamper-evidence guidance on the official site.
Step 2 — Initialize device
Power on the device, choose a PIN, and write down the recovery phrase on the supplied recovery sheet. This phrase is the single backup to your funds — do not store it electronically or share it.
Step 3 — Install Ledger Live
Download Ledger Live from Ledger.com/Start®. Install and follow the on-screen pairing instructions to connect your device. Do not connect to unknown USB hubs.
Step 4 — Add accounts
Within Ledger Live, add the cryptocurrency accounts you want to manage. Ledger Live communicates with the blockchain while the private keys remain on your device.
First transaction
To receive funds, create a receive address in Ledger Live and confirm it on the device screen. To send, verify the transaction details on the hardware device before confirming. This ensures the device—not the host computer—controls final approval.
Quick verification checklist
- Confirm the receive address on the device screen exactly matches Ledger Live.
- Confirm destination addresses and amounts on the device during sends.
- Never type your recovery phrase into a computer or website.
Security & best practices
Device hygiene
Keep firmware up to date via Ledger Live only. If a site directs you to install firmware from another source, treat it as suspicious.
Recovery phrase storage
Store your recovery phrase offline, ideally in a safe or split across multiple secure locations. Consider metal backup plates for long-term fire/water resistance.
Phishing awareness
Double-check domains, use bookmarks for Ledger Live web resources, and enable two-factor authentication for related email accounts. Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase.
Advanced: integrating with apps
Ledger works with many web wallets and DeFi apps via connect flows. Always review the exact transaction payload on your hardware device. If the dApp shows extra unknown permissions, cancel and investigate.
Using the device with mobile (Bluetooth)
Bluetooth connectivity (Nano X) is convenient but increases the attack surface. Keep Bluetooth off when not needed and pair only in trusted environments.
Troubleshooting
Device not detected
Try a different cable and port, ensure the device screen is on, and confirm Ledger Live is allowed network access. For persistent issues, visit the official start page for guides.
Forgot PIN or lost device
If you forget your PIN, the device can be reset; restore access using your recovery phrase on a new Ledger device. If the recovery phrase is lost, funds are unrecoverable — treat the phrase as your last-resort key.
Summary & checklist
Follow this workflow: verify purchase → initialize device → record recovery phrase offline → install Ledger Live → add accounts → confirm transactions on device. Keep firmware and software updated, store your recovery safely, and stay alert to phishing attempts.
